French With Me is a one-woman business officially born in 2021 and I am the one behind it, Marie. Nice to meet you!

It is SO HARD to introduce yourself, am I right? But I do understand we like to know who’s the french coach we’re gonna trust for such an important journey. So I’ll do my best for you <3

My story with languages:

It all started when I decided to major in the only subject I had bad grades in in high school: English ahahah.

Now that I think about it, it was crazy but yeah, I liked literature and adventure… But I couldn’t understand A WORD in the oral listenings. It was horrible.

And then I had the AMAZING chance to go for a year to the United States with an organization (thanks mom and dad). I was in a host family and went to an american high school. I was conversational in 3 months and really comfortable in 6. I came back bilingual and with a real love for languages.

BUT WE KNOW THIS ONLY HAPPENS AT 16 WHEN YOU’RE ABLE TO TOTALLY ERASE YOUR OWN LANGUAGE FROM YOUR LIFE AND LIVE A FULL IMMERSION.

3 years later, I went for a year in Spain for an exchange, DIFFERENT STORY. I spoke english for 6 months, never improved until I made the conscious choice to be in places where people would NOT speak English to me.

And there, I became conversational.

Very different story for Italian too, I knew what I wanted and what I had to do so I managed to have conversations pretty quickly, a little bit thanks to it being so close to spanish but also a lot thanks to listening to loads of italian and having no choice but to speak it.

Now, I am on estonian, but I’ll tell you that later…

The learner I am:

The reality is, I am not some crazy polyglot that spends their life learning languages… I am actually lazy and the less time I spend learning, the better. I like to DO stuff with my languages. Not to learn them for real.

  • I have loved flirting in Spanish…

  • I have loved understanding the internet culture in English…

  • I have loved making friends in Italian…

  • I have loved listening to music in Estonian…

Nowadays, my goal is never to speak perfectly but to be able to have conversations. You can have another goal for sure but just so you know, perfection and grammar are not my thing. The last one IS important when you learn a language, don’t get me wrong, but if I can make it digestible and fun, I WILL. Learning AND teaching.

Did I mention teaching is my thing?? Because languages yeah fun, BUT TEACHING LANGUAGES. That is where my creativity peaks. In love with the possibilities and the smile on my students face [happy crying smiley].

The teacher I am:

I think we often forget languages are a tool and not only something to struggle to learn and I stand by that when I teach. I wanna help you COMMUNICATE, feel like french is something to use, not only to reach.

Here at French With Me, we focus on having conversations. I taught in more traditional settings and I was frustrated at how little people were speaking in class and wondering how anyone would expect them to be able to become conversational with just a class a week and a whole life in English.

So I created the Daily Coaching, a way to guide my students along the journey and to really gives them way to practice everyday.

I know living in France doesn’t mean you have opportunities to speak often so I wanted to give that as much as I could. Conversation Classes are really the way I believe in, I make sure it’s not your classical questions, I make sure you so want to speak about our topic that you forget you’re doing it in French and I make sure it feels like a space space for you to express yourself and to improve your french <3

The human I am:

WELL. I like to do a lot. I like to speak a lot. I like to love a lot.

I am a people person. I am passionate about teaching. And I am slowly discovering the rest I guess…

You’re curious? Let me tell you some:

  • I love going camping, there’s something so peaceful about the slowing down aspect that warms my heart!

  • With that goes the love for nature, especially mountains and hikes!! I live in Grenoble and being able to see mountains everyday and to be less than 30 minutes away from real nature is a BLESSING.

  • I thrive at organizing events, for my friends, in the music and non-profit world or for my business. I am a good MC I believe and I have actually worked with kids and teenagers as a camp counselor when I was young. Being able to organize linguistic trips now is just a joy for me!!

  • I love italian food, chocolate and going to gooood veggie restaurants.

  • I looove making playlists, especially for my students, it enables me to discover so many new artists and curating those is a lot of pleasure for me. I actually spend a lot of time at small concerts in bar and all. I just enjoy being around art in general, museums, temporary events, all this makes me feel GOOD.

  • I am very passionate (and how can you not?) about feminism and fighting for a better and kinder world in general. Homophobia, transphobia, validism, racism and all -ism and -phobia are not tolerated in my classes.

  • You will have noticed I am fond of with yellow and purple, I just LOVE colors and believe we quite lack some nowadays!! I wear loads and have an obsession with patterned colored button-up shirts… Yep… And I try my best to consume second hands… So entering vintage stores is a risk for me as it is the main item you cna find loool.

  • Last but not least, I am a reader or should I say A BOOK LOVER. Because spending time in bookshops is a very different passion than actually reading lol.

I’ll stop there but I hope to know which one you have in common with me and can’t wait to learn more about YOU.
